One thing you get with DCC that you didn't get with the old DC is the ability to make an engine creep along slowly. With DC you control the amount of power to the track and polarity which made the engine adjustment its speed and direction. Low power made the engines movement jerky. With DCC the power remains at a constant 12 volts, instead you control the decoder in the engine with a frequency channeled through the track which controls speed and direction. So you could essentially have two engines on the same track going two different speeds and in opposite directions. Side note, yes it's the engine making all of that noise.
